I am proud and honored to share that on Wednesday, October 1st, I am the Arthritis Foundation’s WOMEN INSPIRING CHANGE Benefit Luncheon Emcee. I would love to have you cheering me on at the Concourse as I emcee this important fundraising and awareness event for women.
My mom suffers from SEVERE systemic arthritis, so I’ll be having her join me at this event, and I’ll be talking about the impact that arthritis has had on her body (and how she’s persevered despite it!).
We’ll also be celebrating an inspiring Dane County woman who’s making great strides at impacting the lives of women and children in our area with arthritis: Dr. Anna Huttenlocher.
Anna Huttenlocher is a Professor in the Departments of Medical Microbiology and Immunology and Pediatrics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is a physician scientist who sees patients with autoimmune disease and primary immunodeficiency disorders. She is Director of Pediatric Rheumatology and Director of the Medical scientist Physician training program (MSTP) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is also a member of the UW Comprehensive Cancer Center, Biotechnology Training Program, Cell and Molecular Biology program, Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology and Cancer Biology programs She is the recent recipient of the APS Norman J. Siegel Outstanding Science Award, the Romnes Award at UW-Madison, membership in the American Society of Clinical Investigation, membership on the Journal of Cell Biology Editorial Board and Chair of the 2009 Gordon conference focused on Gradient sensing and directed cell migration. Dr. Huttenlocher’s research focuses on understanding the basic molecular mechanisms that regulate directed cell migration and inflammation.
The Arthritis Foundation provides advocacy, awareness, and health related programming in the Dane County community. We support those who fight this disease on a daily basis and make a true impact in the face of arthritis. The Arthritis Foundation recognizes the continuous battle women face, not only as those living with arthritis, but for those who are also caregivers of the disease. Many women in our region, in addition to those living with this debilitating disease, also have children who live with the daily struggles of arthritis. There are 6,000 children living with juvenile arthritis in Wisconsin alone!
Studies confirm that in a primary household the woman is the advocate for her family’s healthcare needs, making medical appointments and speaking out publically on behalf of the disease to promote public awareness and policy change. It is our mission to give these women the tools to do just that, supporting the Foundation and being advocates for change. As ambassadors armed with this knowledge these women truly will change the face of arthritis and those it affects.
