Here are the three most common mistakes I see coaches making when conducting sample sessions for prospective clients:
1. Length
The conventional amount of recommended time for a Sample Session is 20 minutes. That is not enough! Allow your Sample Sessions to go as long as necessary (mine sometimes last 90 minutes!)
2. Don’t be afraid to charge
You are giving REAL value, and you can expect to be paid for your expertise and skills. I charge for my Samples, and I let people know that if we decide we’re a match and want to work together beyond that Session, I will credit the Sample Session Fee toward our first month of coaching.
3. Ask for the business
I tell my potential clients up-front that I will be inviting them to continue working with me at the end of the Sample Session, if I feel we’re a match. When I do this, I commit myself to making the ask, and the client is ready to hear the question, taking the icky salesy feeling right out of the situation.
