THINK DiSC!
***How to work with the S style***
PROBLEM:
Your teammate is such a warm and friendly soul, always the one to bring in cupcakes on someone’s birthday or buy the retirement card for all to sign…fiercly loyal and willing to go the extra mile for the team…always. And, yesterday, she stormed out of the office in tears after you told her that were unexpectedly changing some things and needed her brief before Friday.
WHA??? Why’d she respond so emotionally?
You have no clue what set her off, and you are unsure what to do next.
SOLUTION:
Remember, this teammate is likely an “S” behavioral style (her warm, friendly, and caring approach define her as such). That means she is incredibly relationships-focused, people-pleasing, and patient. She is also very process-driven and typically doesn’t adjust quickly or easily to changes. Short deadlines make her sweat above her brow. Because she seeks harmony above all else, she likely will not tell you when she’s feeling out-of-sorts, stressed, or unable to complete her work on time; this results in a pressure cooker situation for her, sometimes (see above). It’s best to avoid this by privately checking in with her from time-to-time to see how projects are coming along and to provide her with the appropriate support, time, and resources needed to complete the task at hand. Allow her to work through things according to her processes and schedule, and quietly reward her with extra time off to spend with her family and close friends (read: “why don’t you get outta here early on Friday so you can have more time with your family and friends up at the lakehouse this week-end…you’ve been working so hard lately, and I want you to know you’re appreciated”).
I’m offering a 2-day course at the UW-Madison on Feb 8-9, 2016. In this class, I’m going to continue this dialogue about S’s, teaching you everything you need to know to communicate more effectively and enhance your relationship with them. We will also cover D’s, i’s, and C’s, too, of course.
BONUS: I am going to teach you how to “people read” so you can guess the style of others without formally assessing them.
This course includes a formal Everything DiSC Assessment and Report.
Register by Jan 15th.
