Note: This is part of a four-part series I’ll be running over the next several weeks regarding building TRUST with the various DiSC styles.
At the heart of every meaningful, productive relationship exists this: TRUST.
Building trust with one another is paramount to creating an effective team. If you are someone who is curious about how to build trust with a D Behavioral Style, read on!
Reminder: D stands for DOMINANCE. The higher one’s “D” is, the greater the preference for naturally exerting control and authority. D’s are driven, pioneering, ambitious, and action-oriented. Often found in leadership roles, D’s are sometimes moving so fast that it’s impossible to catch up with them so you can actually build a trusting relationship! That said, here are three ways to build trust with a D style:
1. The D style prioritizes RESULTS. Intention means nothing if you can’t deliver. Start delivering consistently and you’ll be a long way toward building trust.
2. D’s respect competency, self-sufficiency, and confidence. Ultimately, however, you need to do what you say you would. It’s to enough to talk-the-talk. Follow through with results-focused action and you’ll be good-to-go on building the trust side of the equation.
3. Avoid behaviors that might seem manipulative or flaky. D’s are direct and want directness and authenticity from others–even if they may not like the substance of what you’re saying. Go ahead and say what you mean and mean what you say; they can handle it. And they’ll appreciate it–and trust you more, too.
