As coaches, we sometimes get stumped with “what question to ask next” when working with a client. Here’s a list of some of my favorite go-to questions. Use them and see what opens up for you and your client! When I was first getting started, I kept this list handy at every coaching session (even the in-person ones!). Never get STUCK again!
What’s the topic here?
What are you learning?
What did you learn?
What are you tolerating?
From this perspective, what are your options?
What would be a stretch for you (in terms of your options?)
What are you saying yes/no to?
How committed are you?
What would lock-in a sense of commitment for you?
What do you want to be held accountable for?
What will you do?
How will you do it? By when?
How will I know you’ve completed it?
What would give you joy once you do it?
What are you longing to take on?
What practices do you want to make a regular part of your life?
What are you resisting?
What are you ignoring?
What’s also true here?
Where are you giving up power in your life and to whom?
What’s it mean to be a victim?
What’s it mean to live life from circumstances?
What is your relationship with change?
Bottom line it for me. What’s the essence of the story here?
What are you not recognizing in this situation?
How does that serve you?
In your world, what is x (defeat/success/trust, etc.) to you?
My intuition tells me xyz, what’s your sense of that? What do you feel when I say that?
Say more about that…
I’m just wondering…
What are your take-aways that you can implement?
What did you just learn around x?
What’ll you do next time around x?
What will you start doing differently now?
What would you like your homework to be?
