When writing an email to an i-style team member so they’ll actually read it and (hopefully) take your message under serious advisement, here’s what’s important to remember.
Capture Their Attention With a Compelling Subject Line
i-style individuals are incredibly high energy, with excitement and a zest for EVERYTHING life has to offer. Because they tend to be very busy individuals with full schedules and LOTS happening at any one time, your email must stand out in order to capture their attention. As a high-I, there are two email subject lines that almost always get my attention:
- Anything catchy, kitschy, and/or creative; and
- Anything that directly addresses me and gives me an action (e.g., Chariti—read this now it needs your attention by tomorrow).
Sandwich Constructive Criticism Within Praise and Recognition
i-styles are very motivated by praise and recognition; criticism tends to shut them down. In order to provide necessary but tough-to-hear feedback in an email format, be certain that you are couching suggestions for improvement in between genuine compliments regarding what the i-style is doing that’s RIGHT. While this may seem laborious to some, it is nonetheless important to do, else you risk the i-style individual hitting DELETE on your email and rejecting your message altogether.
Stay Positive
i-style individuals respond to enthusiasm and upbeat messages. They love collaborating with others and always find the silver lining in any situation. Make sure you are highlighting those kinds of things in your emails to them. Doom and gloom will drive i-style individuals away from you and your message. Ultimately, they may do more than simply not read your email; too much negativity and they likely will find another team or place to work.
