One of the many ways that I decompress after a loooooong day is to curl up in my lusciously comfy bed, under a big quilt, with 5 or 6 pillows nesting my head and neck, a noisy box fan blowing a cool breeze over my toes, my dog snoring next to me, and my Kindle in hand. I found some REALLY GOOD reads this summer, so I thought I’d share them with you.
This is a good one if you’re up for a compelling suspense novel set in the 1980’s Irish countryside. Full of rich characters and a good, old-fashioned “who dun it?” murder plot, this was just the escape I was looking for to calm my mind and my nerves at the end of the long July days.
One of my all-time favorite authors because I find his characters so endearing (and their words often make me laugh out loud), this Irving novel doesn’t disappoint. This story about a bisexual man trying to make his way in the mid-20th century America is a thought-provoking exploration of gender identity and the expectations around acceptable social behavior. I found it fascinating.
The Silence of Bonaventure Arrow – Rita Leganski
Mellifluous and lyrical, this book reads like a well-worn melody. I’m having a hard time putting it down. With a few twists and turns in the beginning, it draws you in almost INSTANTLY and keeps you turning pages long into the evening. It’s a mystical story about a boy born in 1950’s New Orleans with a special “gift of rarified hearing” that encompasses every sound every made—and the impact that that has on his past and his future.
So, go forth through this late summer, enjoy, and read on!
