I am a big believer in doing a foundational discovery session with each and every client at the outset of the coaching relationship. For me, the discovery session is a half-day (3-4 hour) workshop where the client and I spend time really digging in and getting in touch with what the client wants, where he/she is headed, and how we’re going to “be” together as coach and client. Done well, this session is incredibly impactful for the client and very informational for you as the coach. Here’s what I do (and this is what I pass along to my clients before the session):
What Will You Walk Away With From This Discovery Session?
- Crisper clarity about “who you are”
- Clear boundaries around how you want to be coached
- A thorough understanding of your natural behavioral style
- More definitive notions about what you want from life
- Increased joy around who you are becoming—both in your personal and professional life
- A feeling of lightness and peace
- Goals you can work on that are specific, measurable, achievable, RESONANT and THRILLING!
It’s a gift to give yourself this kind of time to “be” with yourself for a few hours and explore WHO YOU ARE AT YOUR CORE without reservation or judgment—and I guarantee it’s like nothing you’ve ever experienced! Looking forward to discovering YOU and YOUR next pathway!
Do I charge for this?
I absolutely charge for the Discovery Session; it is not complimentary. I am giving BIG VALUE during this session that is priceless. As a coach, you must be willing to stand your ground and charge separately for this session (or in some way roll it into your fee). Your time is highly, highly valuable; working directly with you is the most prized component of your coaching practice so make sure you’re charging for it.
I am also a big believer that charging for the Discovery Session is important because doing so attaches monetary value to your services. From the get-go, the client sees that you are a professional and expect to be treated as such. I think this is incredibly important for your confidence as a coach and for the relationship you’re co-creating with that client.
Note: I also allow the Discovery Session to be a “stand alone” session. If clients want to do a Discovery Session and are not interested in continuing on to a full coaching package, I offer the Discovery Session by itself, too (and at a premium price!).
