I just had a fantastic session with a new client. She is a coach herself, as most of my clients are. Her question to me was, what do you do when a client that has just experienced a sample session with you gives you the feeling that this person is not going to be a fit for you? You don’t think you’re going to gel together.
You will find in your life that there will be people who come into your path as a coach who, for whatever reason, are not meant to be your clients. You know what? That’s okay. You do not have to take on every person that you offer a sample session to.
How do you know whether or not you want to move forward with them? Very easy. Trust your gut.
By that I mean if you start to hear an inkling in your head that, “I don’t know if I could work with this person long-term because they might just drive me up a frickin’ wall,” do the head-check, gut-check, I always say. If your head and your gut are in alignment, then you know time to take a pass.
What do you say to that person? Well, you could do a couple things.
One would be to just say, “You know what? I’d love to say yes, but I’m going to have to say no because I think that my services may not be a match for what you’re looking for, ultimately.”
You also can rest assured that most of the time, if you’re not a match, they’re not going to pursue you further. If they do and continue to, you can always refer them to another coach. That’s another option. I send referrals out and I have some referral coaches I work with. So, that’s another possibility.
The point is, you don’t have to work with everybody who comes your way. That is not an obligation of yours. You can pick and choose who your clients are, especially as your roster gets fuller. That becomes more and more of an option, which feels really good.
Know that if you just trust your gut you will attract and retain and work with those who are really meant to work with you.
That’s what I have for today! Bye!
